Project Details
Design Process:
I did this work as part of a Call for Artist program through the Town of Vail Environmental Sustainability Department. This program is typically geared towards fine artists, but I had an idea and decided to submit a proposal for an infographic-style piece. They loved my concept and I was selected two years in a row to participate in the program. The core purpose of the program is to educate the community and visitors about where stormwater goes and why it’s important to put “only rain down the drain” – everything that goes down the storm drains ends up in Gore Creek. I wanted to highlight some of the creatures that depend on clean water and healthy habitats to thrive – the bald eagle, boreal toad, Cutthroat Trout and stonefly. I worked with the printer to ensure the template for the design would work on the many shapes and sizes of storm drains around Vail Village. The designs include custom lettering and color palettes.
Impact:
This piece was installed in two of the most high-trafficked areas of Vail & Lionshead Villages and was visible to the 1.2 million people that visit the area each summer*.

How this helps the planet:
The purpose of the storm drain project is to educate and raise awareness around keeping watersheds clean. This promotes, clean drinking water, healthy habitats and sustained recreation opportunities on Gore Creek.
